چکیده

In this paper we report on a system, "SpeechJammer", which can be used to disturb people's speech. In general, human speech is jammed by giving back to the speakers their own utterances at a delay of a few hundred milliseconds. This effect can disturb people without any physical discomfort, and disappears immediately by stop speaking. Furthermore, this effect does not involve anyone but the speaker. We utilize this phenomenon and implemented two prototype versions by combining a direction-sensitive microphone and a direction-sensitive speaker, enabling the speech of a specific person to be disturbed. We discuss practical application scenarios of the system, such as facilitating and controlling discussions. Finally, we argue what system parameters should be examined in detail in future formal studies based on the lessons learned from our preliminary study.

Auditory feedback control during a sentence-reading task: Effect of other’s voice

1. Introduction Speech perception plays an important role in speech production. When we speak, we always control our voice through speech perception in order to adapt our speaking to unpredictable environmental changes. For example, according to the Lombard effect [1], pitch or loudness increases under a noisy condition. An artificial change such as a delayed auditory feedback (DAF) or a transf...

Auditory Brainstem Response Wave Amplitude Characteristics as a Diagnostic Tool in Children with Speech Delay with Unknown Causes

Speech delay with an unknown cause is a problem among children. This diagnosis is the last differential diagnosis after observing normal findings in routine hearing tests. The present study was undertaken to determine whether auditory brainstem responses to click stimuli are different between normally developing children and children suffering from delayed speech with unknown causes. In this cr...

Delayed auditory feedback with static and dynamic visual feedback

Visual speech information influences the accuracy and content of auditory speech perception, with both the static and dynamic components of the visual signal playing a role. However, less is known about the effect of visual information when it is presented as a source of speech production feedback. This paper presents results from a delayed auditory feedback paradigm which contrasted the presen...

Speech disruption during delayed auditory feedback with simultaneous visual feedback.

Delayed auditory feedback (DAF) regarding speech can cause dysfluency. The purpose of this study was to explore whether providing visual feedback in addition to DAF would ameliorate speech disruption. Speakers repeated sentences and heard their auditory feedback delayed with and without simultaneous visual feedback. DAF led to increased sentence durations and an increased number of speech disru...

Reduction in Stuttering by Delayed and Frequency Shifted Auditory Feedback: Effects of Adaptation and Sex Differences

Eleven women and eleven men who stutter had to read five text passages, each with non altered, delayed (53 msec) and frequency shifted (-1⁄2 octave) auditory feedback, provided by headphones. Stuttering was measured as Percentage of Discontinuous Speech Time, by which durations of all stuttering moments are determined and related to the entire duration of the speech sample. For both sexes stutt...
